Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR)

NMR spectroscopy is a non-destructive analysis method that uses radiowaves to obtain information about how atoms are connected in compounds by observation of the specific quantam mechanical properties of its atomic nucleus.

The basic principle behind NMR is that many nuclei have spin and all nuclei are electrically charged. If an external magnetic field is applied, an energy transfer is possible between the base energy to a higher energy level.

The energy transfer takes place at a wavelength that corresponds to radio frequencies and when the spin returns to its base level, energy is emitted at the same frequency.

The signal that matches this transfer is measured and processed using software in order to yield an NMR spectrum for the nucleus concerned.

Raw Materials Screening with Assure Software and NMR

Impurities and adulterants in starting materials pose potential health threats when present in the manufacturing of pharmaceutical APIs and drug products. These same impurities and adulterants may also result in lower production yields and greater needs for product purification.

Screening starting materials using Assure™ - Raw Material Screening identifies problem samples prior to use and prevents costly manufacturing mistakes. Designed for GMP environments, Assure - Raw Material Screening provides a traceable record of sample analysis and results.

Other Applications of NMR

NMR provides a complete analysis and interpretation of the entire spectrum and is highly suitable for chemical analysis and chemistry education. It is often used in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries to qualify materials, verify reactions, and verify organic molecular structures.  NMR is also routinely used in advanced medical imaging techniques such as in mangetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Advantages of NMR Method+  can detect very fine structural components+  works for organic and inorganic materials+  excellent for simultaneous targeted and non-targeted screening of raw materials for impurities and adulterants when used with the Assure Software Package Disadvantages of NMR Method-  not as fast as FTIR -  instruments are usually more expensive than most other methods -  relatively large amounts of the substance being analyzed is required to give good signals compared to some other methods of analysis

Global Scientific Sales highly recommends the Fourier 300 for NMR analysis as it delivers powerful performance and compact size at a minimum cost.  When used with Assure, you can perfom simultaneous targeted and non-targeted screening of raw materials for impurities and adulterants.

We also offer a wide range of alternative methods of testing including XRF, OES, FTIR, RAMAN, and VCD.
